QUESTION POSED ON: 26 March 2007
Does SQL Server 2005 (any edition) come with an extended stored procedure, allowing you to back up databases? If so, what is it called? I've looked all over the internet but only found third party ones.

EXPERT RESPONSE
I'm not sure why you would need an extended stored procedure to do this. The backup processing is built into SQL Server using the BACKUP command. This could be run from the command line using SQLCMD for SQL 2005 or OSQL for SQL Server 2000. There is also the xp_sqlmaint extended stored procedure that could be used. This is used by maintenance plans. Its underlying application is sqlmaint.exe.
